The Democrats' turning point

Anyone that thinks that the Democrats didn't misplay the relief negotiations is kidding themselves. I'll stipulate that using executive orders to get what he wanted isn't exactly the method I'd prefer. I'd prefer using the system to get things done. When Pelosi's and Schumer's Democrats insist on holding the people hostage on unemployment and eviction relief, which is what they tried, then I'm perfectly fine with President Trump handing them their arses.

Yesterday on The Five, Dagen McDowell broke out the whipping stick to paddle Ms. Pelosi's butt. Dagen said "President Trump really found a sweet spot for what the economy and the American people need right now. They do need extra money. People who can't go back to work need extra money in unemployment benefits. The $600 went away. Many argued that was too generous. It was an incentive to stay home. They were getting more on unemployment than they would be if they were back on the job. ... The President has the Democrats in a vice-grip. Either the Democrats have to give in to what Republicans want or they're gonna fight the President on giving people money, people who need that money. I've been a financial journalist for about a quarter of a century and, in technical terms, what we witnessed over the weekend were some folks getting their asses handed to them."
That's exactly right. This hasn't been a great year for Nancy Pelosi. She tried pushing Mitch McConnell around on rules for the sham impeachment trial. McConnell told her that he didn't care if she didn't send the articles of impeachment over. He didn't want them anyway. After COVID hit, Pelosi delayed the passage of the CARES Act while negotiating for Democrat Wish List items. She's done that now 3 times. Each time, President Trump got the better of the negotiations. Now, she's back for another attempt.

Pelosi keeps getting her arse handed to her because she's constantly trying to throw extra wish list junk into these relief bills that has nothing to do with providing relief to people. By doing that, Pelosi looks like a hyper-partisan loser who puts partisanship ahead of the people. That's the fast track to defeat.

I think that this is a turning point in the campaign. President Trump looks compassionate. Democrats look like partisans. That isn't the image that Democrats want heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

I'll have more on that front later today. This isn't the position Democrats want to be in.

Gary, do you read Portland as more help or more hurt for Trump? With independents, vs the base?

The executive order stunt is young. See how many governors go with it, and in which states. It might help Trump but not Republican Senators or House members up for reelection this cycle. We will only know after the votes are counted, but is trump standing on one of the painted ponies going up and down while stretching for the gold ring, to get another carousel ride?

Do you foresee GOP gains in either or both legislative houses in Minnesota? Do you foresee Trump winning Minnesota with GOP GOTV?

Is there any crystal ball you've got packed away for such thoughts? Will climate and BLM be factors, or Covid handling at the federal level?

Accountability handoff attempts, to States, is a tactic, but is it strategic or seen as disingenuous for an executive order firestormer to then say, this or that's for governors but I get Homeland Security suited up and moving?

My guess is turnout will control. GOP GOTV has been consistent -- Dem Party, less so. Biden is playing cozy-quiet and that failed with Kerry trying it. Will Never Trump grow legs beyond its current stretch? If so, in which states do you see it playing a larger role? Do you at this point see Bloomberg as a factor, or was he just a Biden stalking horse?

Response 1.1 by Gary Gross at 11-Aug-20 10:20 PM
Portland is definitely a plus for Trump. Ditto with Seattle & Chicago. The primary function of gov't. is to protect people. Those cities have failed miserably.

The EO "stunt" as you put it is a definite net + for Republicans. They put legislation together that Democrats rejected. The Republicans' legislation wouldn't have bailed out the cities & states that've implemented socialist policies that've strangled their economies. That's on the Democrats.

Do you foresee GOP gains in either or both legislative houses in Minnesota? Do you foresee Trump winning Minnesota with GOP GOTV?I'm predicting that the GOP holds onto the Senate majority & flipping the House. I still think it's an uphill fight for Trump but it's still possible. Walz is a net drag on the DFL ticket, in my estimation.

Democrats = economic illiterates

If anyone tells you that Democrats aren't economic illiterates, don't trust them. This article highlights just how stupid (perhaps dishonest?) Democrats are. According to the article, "Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, speaking from the Senate floor, warned that the 'economy is failing' and 'state and local governments are cutting essential services. We're going to see layoffs, and this is not an abstract concept,' Schumer said Sunday during an interview with ABC's "This Week." 'You know, the Republicans say 'the blue states.' A firefighter is a firefighter. A person who drives a bus, a person who picks up the garbage - those are important jobs."

First, someone should explain to Sen. Schumer that the first responsibility of government is to protect the people. That means that police and firefighters shouldn't be on the list of budget cuts until there's a complete economic collapse. Period. Further, the city doesn't have to collect garbage collection. People are perfectly capable of doing that themselves.

Third, as I'm writing this, the DJIA is up another 250+ points . That's on top of yesterday's 350+ point gain. That tells me that they see brighter days ahead. On top of that, we had another robust jobs report last Friday, where we found out that 1,763,000 jobs were created. That brings the total number of jobs created for May-July, 2020 to 9,300,000. Watching this interview is difficult, at least when watching Gov. Cuomo begging and AOC chasing businesses from New York:
Bailouts, begging and tax increases isn't a recipe for economic prosperity. These days, though, that's apparently the Democrats' economic plan:

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, one of the lead White House negotiators, called Democrats' request for $1 trillion for states "an absurd number," saying there's "plenty" of cash available already for the governments. "We're not going to give a trillion dollars for state and local," he said during an interview with CNBC on Monday. "That's just not a reasonable approach."

NYC, for example, is a total disaster. People are leaving fast. That's why Gov. Cuomo is begging them to return. That has no chance of working until NYC stops taxing people to death. That won't change until Mayor de Blasio gets serious about preventing crime and prosecuting rioters.

Let's be truthful about this. NYC won't get turned around until there's a new mayor. Finally, if there's a more famous economic illiterate than AOC, I wouldn't know who it'd be. She's an embarrassment.

The "economy" is not synonymous with equity prices, nor with the bond market. Tax break money has to be parked somewhere, unless recycled into circulating money supply. And yes, some prefer the economic literacy of Kudlow (yet to gain a Nobel prize). Paycheck to paycheck regular folks have been missing paychecks - so whose economy is which? Farm economy? Brazil is selling soybeans like crazy, Cargill being a major player there.

Comment 2 by J. Ewing at 12-Aug-20 09:19 AM
AOC is supposedly a college graduate in economics. Yet she believes spending 5 years of the total US economic output to avoid 0.03 degrees of warming over the next 100 years is a great cost/benefit proposition. Democrats over the years have shown their ironclad belief that they can, by law, repeal the laws of chemistry, physics, economics and human nature. They are delusional and dangerous fools.

Joe Biden picks Kamala Harris as running mate

Joe Biden made it official just moments ago. Biden picked Kamala Harris as his running mate. According to Axios, "Joe Biden announced Tuesday that he has chosen Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) as his running mate, the first Black woman to be named to a major-party U.S. presidential ticket, and potentially the first woman vice president if Biden defeats President Trump."

The question now turns to whether the Harris pick will help the Biden-Harris ticket with African-American voters or if it'll hurt the ticket. This Vox article , first published on Jan. 23, 2019, was updated today to reflect Biden's picking of Sen. Harris as his running mate. The original article, though, was about Harris's record as California's Attorney General. According to the article, "A close examination of Harris's record shows it's filled with contradictions. She pushed for programs that helped people find jobs instead of putting them in prison, but also fought to keep people in prison even after they were proved innocent . She refused to pursue the death penalty against a man who killed a police officer, but also defended California's death penalty system in court. She implemented training programs to address police officers' racial biases, but also resisted calls to get her office to investigate certain police shootings."

This is a major issue within the Democratic Party. It's a major problem with this ticket. Biden was the chief author of the 1994 Crime Bill. Then-State Attorney Gen. Harris was ordered by a judge to release prisoners who were determined by the courts to have been not guilty of the crime they were convicted of.
Opposite the Biden-Harris ticket is the Trump-Pence ticket. Trump-Pence passed the First Step Act, the first bill to correct the mistakes made in the Biden 1994 Crime Bill. Check out Alice Marie Johnson's reaction to the signing of that bill:
The biggest speculation before today's announcement was that Biden's running mate would shoulder the load of doing the majority of interviews. That sounds nice but it isn't related to the truth. People want to size up the presidential candidates. Further, whatever Sen. Harris says during confrontational interviews will reflect back on the entire ticket.

If she goes as radical as the activists want, she'll hurt the ticket with moderates. If she isn't willing to go hardline for the activists, the activists won't turn out to vote. Honestly, the race just got more entertaining for me. I'm popping the popcorn and opening a beer. All Y'all are invited to my home to watch this unfold.

Why would Harris help get the black vote? She isn't of African decent that I know of. If I were black, I'd scoff at voting for the ticket because it wasn't who was best, it was who had darker skin and the XX chromosome. Of course I'd also be licking my wounds from 8 years of a black president who did nothing for me but that's a topic for another time.

Comment 2 by eric z at 12-Aug-20 10:16 AM
Biden's choice. Bless the two of them. Each ticket, a pair career politicians. Trump did his prior politics from the private sector, but each ticket, a pair of career politicians. Little else to say.

Who is Kamala Harris?

Much has been said thus far about Kamala Harris since she became Joe Biden's running mate. The NYTimes insists that she's a "pragmatic moderate." That's one of the most laughable statements the NYTimes has ever made. Former Clintonista George Stephanopoulos insists that "Kamala Harris comes from the middle of the road, moderate wing of the Democratic Party." GovTrack.us said Sen. Harris "ranked most liberal compared to all senators."

Those statements and ratings perfectly fit Sen. Harris. Sen. Harris is a Democrat who is whoever she needs to be at that moment in time. When she took on Biden on bussing, she portrayed herself as an oppressed civil rights leader. When she announced that she favored Medicare-for-All in terms of health care, Harris identified herself as Bernie Sanders' moderate sister. When she questioned Ron Vitiello during his confirmation hearing, she asked him "Are you aware of the perception of many about how the power and the discretion at ICE is being used to enforce the laws and do you see any parallels?" Check out this sickening video of Harris's interrogation of Vitiello:
Implicit within Sen. Harris's questioning is the insinuation that enforcing the immigration laws of this nation is just as evil as the KKK threatening African-Americans simply because of their skin color. This is as disgusting a display of bigotry as Jesse Jackson calling NYC Hymietown because of NYC's large Jewish population.

One thing that's certain about who Sen. Harris is is that she's a lefty in terms of illegal immigration. Meghan McCain twisted Harris into a pretzel in this interview:

Harris: I am not for decriminalizing or not having any consequences ... Let me just be really clear. We have to have a secure border but I am in favor of saying that we are not going to treat people who are not documented as criminals. That is correct.

BTW, Sen. Harris's position on illegal immigration was shared by all 10 Democrats then vying for the Democrats' presidential nomination:
Two things are noteworthy about this. First, it's indisputable that decriminalizing illegal immigration and supplying illegal immigrants with taxpayer-funded health care are firmly within the mainstream of the Democratic Party. Next, it's equally indisputable that most people outside the Democrat Party don't agree with the Democrats' position.

Therefore, the NYTimes is right in saying that Sen. Harris is "a pragmatic moderate" if the sole criteria for that is the unanimous position of the Democrats' presidential candidates. It isn't difficult to make the indisputable case, though, that the center of the Democrat Party is far outside the mainstream of American politics. Joe Biden adopted Bernie Sanders' unity manifesto. For the past 2 election cycles, Bernie has campaigned on leading a revolution. Leading a revolution while being a moderate is a tricky thing to pull off.

If there's anything that's true about Kamala Harris, it's that she's whoever she needs to be whenever she needs to abandon her principals. This article highlights the fact that she isn't a principled person:

Harris beefed up her #MeToo credentials later, making it clear she doesn't just believe women accusing Republicans of sexual assault. All women had to be believed, including those who 'accused prominent Democrats. At a campaign event in Nevada in April 2019, Harris discussed the allegations against Biden, declaring of the accusers: "I believe them, and I respect them being able to tell their story and having the courage to do it."

So Biden is an abuser - 'because women have accused him, and all women should be believed. Right?

So what has changed since then? Sexual assault and harassment are some of the most serious 'allegations that can be leveled against a man. Harris now needs to account for why she is comfortable joining an abuser's 2020 ticket. This isn't some 'debate-stage policy disagreement she can just walk back, claiming she has "evolved."

Yesterday, Harris said that the case against President Trump is an open-and-shut case. The case against Sen. Harris's authenticity is an open-and-shut case, too. That's because Harris's authenticity is the kind that can only be faked. Phony Kamala is the perfect nickname for her.

Introducing the first Democrat openly pro-gun confiscation ticket

Next week, Joe Biden will officially accept the Democrats' presidential nomination. The night before he accepts the Democrats' presidential nomination, Kamala Harris will accept the nomination to be Biden's running mate. When Biden accepts the nomination, Biden-Harris will become the first gun confiscation presidential ticket in history.

The only things that Sen. Harris hasn't faked is her lust to be president and her lust to confiscate guns. She famously said that, if elected, she'll "give Congress 100 days to get their act together" and pass gun control legislation for her to sign. If they don't get that bill passed, she'll use her executive authority to confiscate weapons:
Think about this. It isn't just Harris that wants to confiscate guns. Biden wants to confiscate guns, too:
The easiest way to prevent Kamala Harris and Joe Biden from confiscating your firearms is to vote for President Trump. Don't forget that Biden-Harris want to confiscate your firearms while other Democrats are voting to dismantle entire police departments or dramatically cut funding for police departments. While cities turn into open-air shooting galleries, Democrats want to strip you of your right to protect your family. What part of that sounds right with you?

Democrats frequently use the argument that hunters shouldn't need 100-round clips. Joe Biden and Amy Klobuchar are 2 of the Democrats who've said that recently. That's true. Hunters don't need those high-capacity clips. People protecting their families in Chicago, NYC or Minneapolis might find comfort om those high-capacity clips, though.

Biden told Robert Francis O'Rourke that he'd name O'Rourke as his gun czar. This is why he'd do that:
Democrats are fast turning into the party that confiscates guns and dismantling police departments. They're homeland security nightmares.

Tuesday's bloodbath: the crazies have taken full control of the DFL

Harold Hamilton's weekly commentary contains some bad news for the DFL. This past Tuesday, while I was paying attention to the national news, DFL primary voters delivered a harsh message to the DFL. First, Hamilton highlights the fact that the "labor wing" of the DFL is persona non grata within the DFL. Hamilton wrote "Start with State Senate District 7, where incumbent Erik Simonson suffered a savage beatdown at the hands of newcomer Jen McEwen. Simonson, a moderate, supported mining and pipelines and frequently crossed party lines. In short, he was an old-school blue-collar Democrat."

Hamilton continued, writing "Simonson had the backing of nearly the entire constellation of DFL opinion leaders, including Governor Walz and a raft of independent spending on his behalf from unions and other special interest groups. Despite this dynamic, Simonson was crushed 74-23%, losing every single precinct in the district ."

Couple this thorough thrashing with Susan Kent's defeat of Tom Bakk to become the Senate DFL Leader and it's exceptionally clear that the Iron Range DFL delegation are welcome only to maintain the chance of putting together a majority. The DFL doesn't want the Iron Range delegation's mining agenda.

In House District 59B, Rep. Raymond Dehn was beaten by newcomer Esther Agbaje. Let's be clear about Rep. Dehn's liberal, woke street cred. Dehn is a proud ex-con, having done time for a 1976 felony burglary, presumably to feed an admitted cocaine addiction. More importantly, Dehn can rightly proclaim that he was for defunding the police before "defunding the police" became a cause celebre. Dehn was excoriated for his suggestion to disarm the Minneapolis Police Department, even though he was more than prescient as a liberal standard-bearer. The problem for Ray Dehn, clearly, was that he was the wrong race and color for the Group Identity Mob.

Then there's this:

In another section of Minneapolis, Senator Jeff Hayden lost his primary to Omar Fateh, a Democrat of a different stripe. Fateh proudly ran against Hayden as a Democrat Socialist. Again, Jeff Hayden wouldn't be mistaken for a moderate anywhere. He has earned high marks from progressive groups everywhere.

Finally, over in Saint Paul, longtime legislative fixture John Lesch was unceremoniously dumped in the most surprising result of the night, save for Simonson's beat down.

The thought that Jeff Hayden. Ray Dehn and John Lesch aren't sufficiently leftist enough in this DFL says everything. When Jeff Hayden isn't sufficiently left for the activists, that means that major changes are about to happen.

I'm sticking with my prediction that Jeremiah Ellison will be the next mayor of Minneapolis. I'll further predict that he'll run the city into the ground. The DFL is at a tipping point. If they don't return to their blue collar roots, they'll essentially be an urban party for a generation.

The inmates are really running the asylum now aren't they? How do those voting for even more of the same horrible result not see that they are not going to improve the situation voting for these activists? I guess they get what they deserve and when there's no one left but gangs and warlords, it will be way too late.

The first Durham domino falls

Kevin Clinesmith, a former FBI lawyer, " will plead guilty to making a false statement in the first criminal case arising from U.S. Attorney John Durham's review of the investigation into links between Russia and the 2016 Trump campaign."

Clinesmith is being charged in federal court in Washington and is expected to plead guilty to one count of making a false statement, his attorney Justin Shur told 360aproko news. "Kevin deeply regrets having altered the email. It was never his intent to mislead the court or his colleagues as he believed the information he relayed was accurate. But Kevin understands what he did was wrong and accepts responsibility," Shur later said in a statement.

That's lawyerspeak for saying 'My client is guilty as sin' without admitting he's guilty as sin. Sean Davis of the Federalist wrote this article on the expected Clinesmith guilty plea. In that article, Davis wrote this:

Horowitz and his team wrote in a 434-page report that Clinesmith, identified in the report as "OGC Attorney", altered an email from a separate U.S. federal agency, believed to be the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), to falsely state that Page had never worked with the CIA to investigate suspected Russia agents operating within the U.S. In fact, as Clinesmith was told by the operative, Page had worked with the CIA previously, as well as with the FBI.

It's difficult to picture a more corrupt action. This is a severe violation of Carter Page's civil rights, starting with the Fourth Amendment. The text of the Fourth Amendment :

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures , shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause , supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

It's difficult to picture how a search could be determined to be reasonable if it's based on a lie. Further, how could misrepresenting the facts satisfy the legal standard of probable cause? Clinesmith allegedly changed the email used in the FISA warrant application from saying that that Carter Page was a CIA asset to saying Page had never been a CIA asset. Further, the Fourth Amendment requires that someone affirm the accuracy of the application.
This is the first investigation into the Russia Collusion hoax that's actually presented evidence of a crime. Adam Schiff's faux impeachment investigation presented hearsay testimony but it didn't present evidence that a crime had been committed. Schiff played fast and loose with the rules of evidence. Durham is a legitimate investigator who found the original email, then found the doctored email.

This is just the first shoe to drop. Clinesmith didn't have the authority to sign off on the warrant application. He was just one piece of this puzzle.

NYPD, PBA, endorse Donald Trump

Each day, it becomes more clear that this election isn't about Democrats vs. Republicans. Rather, it's about sane people vs. the lunatic left. Friday afternoon, the NYPD and the NY Police Benevolent Association, aka NY PBA, endorsed President Trump .

Joe Biden's message on policing has been inconsistent. One day, he's said that he's fine with redirecting money away from police budgets. At other times, he's said he's for strengthening police forces. Those 2 positions are opposites. You can't strengthen police forces if you're cutting funding. More importantly, it's important to consistently have the officers' backs. The exception to having the officers' backs is in a George Floyd-like situation. There isn't a need to defend the indefensible.

This isn't the first endorsement President Trump has gotten from a police organization. In this post , I wrote about the endorsement President Trump received from the National Association of Police Organizations, aka NAPO. This is part of that post:

According to NAPO's website , "The National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) is a coalition of police unions and associations from across the United States and was organized for the purpose of advancing the interests of America's law enforcement officers through legislative advocacy, political action and education."

The National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) endorsed President Trump's reelection Wednesday, praising his "steadfast and very public support" for law enforcement. NAPO did not endorse a candidate in the 2016 election but endorsed former President Barack Obama and then-Vice President Joe Biden in both the 2008 and 2012 elections.

What's telling is that Joe Biden didn't even try to get their endorsement. Biden would love to tout the support of another labor union so that isn't why he didn't try for this endorsement. He didn't want to run afoul of the Antifa/BLM wing of the Democrat Party.

Democrats have stated that they aren't anti-police. Democrats have also insisted that the violence isn't widespread. Both statements are lies. The AOC/Jeremiah Ellison wing of the Democrat Party is just as anti-police as the Antifa-BLM wing of the Democrat Party. That's before considering the fact that the Seattle PD cut the funding for the SPD, then tried cutting Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best's salary.
Democrats think that police officers pose a bigger threat to society than Antifa-BLM. That's how nuts they've become. The national leaders can make whatever conciliatory-sounding pro-police statements they want. They're utterly irrelevant. Police departments are run locally. At that level, they're run by Antifa activists:

Keith Ellison, Jeremiah's father, tried spinning Jeremiah's tweet :

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison (D) said Monday that his son's tweet in support of Antifa was more a comment about the 'absurdity' of President Trump's remarks blaming proponents of the anti-fascist ideology for violence at recent demonstrations across the country over the police killing of George Floyd. "I think that was a comment about the absurdity of the president's comment more than anything else," Ellison said Monday on CNN.

That is some of the most absurd spin I've ever heard. That being said, it's what I'd expect from Keith Ellison.

Open letter to the Iron Range DFL

To: Iron Range DFL
From: Gary Gross, uppity peasant, patriot & 2A advocate
Subject: Guilt by party affiliation

The blue collar workers that populate the Iron Range DFL have a question that can't be avoided anymore. In the past, it wasn't that difficult to justify staying affiliated with the metro DFL. They didn't like mining, you said, but they tossed the Iron Range DFL delegation a few scraps at the end of the session each year. It's true that the Metrocrats hated the Second Amendment but they weren't fanatics about it.

The thinking was that, for the most part, the Metro DFL supported the police. Those rationalizations have disappeared entirely. While there's still some common sense still found in the Iron Range DFL, that can't be said of Metro DFL. The Metro DFL is largely represented by people like John Thompson. "John Thompson is running for Minnesota State House District 67A." This is John Thompson in action:

The lunatic in that video doesn't resemble the man in this video:
They're both the same guy. The man in the second video is the fake face of a man who will say anything to win a seat in the Minnesota House. The man in the first video is the real face of the man. The point is that the lunatic that was unleashed in the first tape belongs to the same DFL that the Iron Range DFL belong to.

The Iron Range DFL needs to make a decision fast. When Erik Simonson got thrashed in his SD-7 DFL primary, he didn't just lose every precinct in his district. He was told by the lunatic fringe of the DFL that blue collar workers weren't welcome in the DFL anymore.

The question you need to ask yourself is whether you're ok being treated like dirt by the Metro DFL simply because you want to make living and provide for your family. The Metro DFL have made it exceptionally clear that they have a problem with you making a living. Isn't it time you flipped the Metro DFL the bird and told them to eff off and die?
