Judge's Ruling Appealed

Circuit Judge Janet Ferris' ruling that the Florida GOP couldn't post signs at FL-16 polling stations isn't just absurd, it's illogical and anti-democracy. Here's the statements that tell me why this ruling will be overturned on appeal:
Florida Secretary of State Sue Cobb, an appointee of Republican Gov. Jeb Bush, asked the 1st District Court of Appeal to reverse the ruling. The court agreed to expedite the case. Early voting for the Nov. 7 election begins Monday. "A confused voter should not be compelled to guess," said Cobb spokeswoman Jenny Nash. Cobb has until noon Monday to file written arguments, and the Democratic Party has until noon Wednesday to reply.
Then there's this statement:
University of Florida legal professor Jon Mills said the ruling is a strict and logical interpretation of statutes. "It doesn't say you can do it, so you can't," said Mills, who directs the college's Center for Governmental Responsibility and was the Democratic House speaker in the late 1980s.
It's apparent that Mills is playing partisan politics with this. Law students can tell you that if a statute neither prohibits or mandates something, then it's silent on the issue. I'd further suspect that Mills knows that Negron will win if this notice is posted.

Finally, there's this statement from Jeb Bush:
Gov. Jeb Bush said the secretary of state has the authority to provide "information to guide someone on how to vote to give them the simple fact there is going to be an election where by law Mark Foley is on the ballot but he's not running; Joe Negron is."
I suspect that Gov. Bush and Secretary of State Sue Cobb will prevail on appeal.
Florida Secretary of State Sue Cobb, an appointee of Republican Gov. Jeb Bush, asked the 1st District Court of Appeal to reverse the ruling. The court agreed to expedite the case.
Florida's Secretary of State has the responsibility of overseeing voting laws and procedures. I'll trust her expertise on election law over that of a judge's.

Reject the Political Muslim-Bashing Smears

That's the title of the Strib op-ed written by CAIR's Executive Director Nihad Awad and CAIR's board chairman Parvez Ahmed. In essence, Mssrs. Awad and Ahmed use this op-ed as a guilt trip.
There has been much sound and fury in certain circles about the American Muslim community's support for Keith Ellison and his campaign to represent Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District. A handful of right-wing bloggers, agenda-driven commentators and political operatives have used scurrilous smear tactics in an attempt to derail his campaign and to marginalize American Muslim voters. These smears and distortions send an un-American message of intolerance and bigotry.
When I read the line that these "distortions send an un-American message", it triggered some red flags. A look back into the documentation that I've accumulated brought me to this Daniel Pipes article:
When President Bush closed the Holy Land Foundation in December for collecting money he said was "used to support the Hamas terror organization," CAIR decried his action as "unjust" and "disturbing."
UPDATE: Here's another statement that CAIR made:
The extradition order for suspected Hamas terrorist Mousa Abu Marzook it labeled "anti-Islamic" and "anti-American."
CAIR is more concerned with its image than with its substance. CAIR wants people like you and me to feel guilty for criticizing Keith Ellison. They want us to feel guilty rather than focusing on Ellison being supported by an organization that defends terrorists and their charities. CAIR wants people to believe that they're moderates, that they only care about Muslims' civil rights.

Unfortunately, their ties to terrorism run much too deep, as evidenced here:
At a 1994 meeting at Barry University, Nihad Awad stated succinctly, "I am a supporter of the Hamas movement."

---------------

As luck would have it, just hours before the hearing, news services reported that former CAIR official Bassem K. Khafagi had pleaded guilty to charges of visa and bank fraud in federal court in Detroit. The charges were brought against Khafagi for his role with the Islamic Assembly of North America, a group that has advocated violence against the United States and is believed to have funneled money to organizations with terrorist connections. At the time of his arrest, Khafagi was Community Affairs director with CAIR.
Nihad Awad and Parvez Ahmed don't want us focusing on these facets to their 'movement'. Instead, they want us to think that their support for Keith Ellison is just another feather in their 'civil rights cap', that their support is altruistic. There's a reason why Ellison is being called "CAIR's Congressman" and it isn't for altruistic reasons. It's being done for nefarious reasons.

I've got a sizeable compilation of information on CAIR, far more than I've got time to put into this post. However, if you're interested in this additional CAIR information, click on the this link, fill out the required fields & the "Your Message" field and I'll gladly send you enough CAIR information to read to fill a morning.

Don't let Mssrs. Awad and Ahmed fool you. They aren't moderate Muslims. They aren't Muslim civil rights leaders. They're men with terrorist ties. That's why you shouldn't take their claims seriously.
