The Prevalent Meme

Wouldn't you know that the minute I offer you statistics that don't forecast gloom is the minute that I find an article that still uses the meme that Rove will have to be a miracle-worker to save the GOP's collective bacon.
Rove knows something about tough battles, and he's in another one. Freed from the uncertainty over whether he would face criminal charges, an indictment would have forced him to vacate his West Wing office, Bush's top strategist is focusing his full attention on the fall elections. Some Republicans see him as their best hope for heading off disaster in November.
The statistics that CNN say that this isn't shaping up as a GOP disaster. What's alarming is that "some Republicans" think this year's elections will be a disaster. I suspect that these are the people that are still living in the 'old school world', who think that blogs aren't credible and who think that the Agenda Media outlets like the NY Times and CBS still set the agenda.

Republicans that think we're heading for a disaster would be better served to wake up and consider these political realities:
  • A combined 55 percent said things were going "fairly well" (47 percent) or "very well" (8 percent), compared with those who said "pretty badly" (29 percent) or "very badly" (15 percent).
  • "Only 41 percent of Americans believe that Democratic leaders in Congress 'would move the country in the right direction,'" Mark Preston, CNN's political editor, writes on the network's Web site...slightly less than the 43 percent of Americans who believe that Republican leaders in Congress 'would move the country in the right direction.'"
  • Moreover, many voters who say they will vote for a Democrat in November also say their vote is not definite.
Factor in that polls show Republicans leading on the issue of national security and you shouldn't come to the conclusion that the GOP is heading for disaster.

Another good sign is that Mr. Rove hasn't lost his sense of humor:
He often draws protesters, too. In Austin on Saturday, anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan and others were restrained by police when they tried to get into the dinner. She read an "arrest warrant" listing "crimes" of the "evil mastermind" inside. A demonstrator who managed to get into the dinner interrupted Rove's speech with a denunciation of the Iraq war and was dragged from the room. Rove joked, "Did you get her check before she left?"
Mr. Rove is a great instigator, knowing just when (and how) to stick the shiv in.
