Congressional candidate Rod Grams visited Mora's Mustang Restaurant Tuesday to visit with voters and talk about issues he believes voters want to discuss. Grams, whose experience in politics includes having served in both the Senate and House of Representatives, said he has been busy since declaring his candidacy earlier this year but that there's nothing else he'd rather be doing. "You've got to leave everything behind when you run for Congress," Grams said. "I had to quit my job, which was tough, and my wife kept asking if I were crazy. She's been very supportive though."Grams certainly faces an uphill fight against Jim Oberstar. Still, I've seen reporting that the only thing keeping that district blue is Oberstar so maybe Grams can put some pressure on Oberstar and make this a tight race. At worst, he's putting himself in position to be the logical successor when Oberstar finally retires.
Grams, whose stop in Mora Tuesday was part of a day-long tour of the district, also visited with First Lady Laura Bush in Minneapolis Tuesday.
Grams said that everywhere he goes people tell him they are tired of the way politicians conduct business and that he believes he can bring a different style of leadership to Washington. "People are fed up with what's going on in Washington," Grams said. "(Oberstar) has always been classified as a conservative democrat, but he's in the top 10.5 percent in liberal voting. He's supporting liberals in the elections going on right now, so what exactly does he stand for?"This makes alot of sense. I like Grams' approach to this race, too. He's perfectly suited for the outsider role that most people find appealing. It'll be interesting to see how his message sells when he starts pointing out the differences between Oberstar's in district image & his Washington image. If that gets traction, this might be a very tight race. At this point, though, you'd have to say that that possibility isn't worth betting the ranch on.
