Immigration Fight

I just visited Polipundit & found a full-fledged fight going on over immigration. Polipundit himself decided that he'd had enough of the immigration issue and issued this proclamation:
The following Republican politicians, who would sell US citizenship to millions of illegal invaders, have permanently lost my support for any elected office:

President George W. Bush
Governor Jeb Bush (R-FL)
Senator John McCain (R-AZ)
Senator Bill Frist (R-TN)
Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS)
Senator Chuck Hagel (R_NE)
Senator Mike DeWine (R-OH)
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA)
Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM)
Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL)

----------

The following Republican politicians have earned my support for any elected office:

Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO)
Rep. J. D. Hayworth (R-AZ)
Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL)
Senator George Allen (R-VA)
Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA)
Polipundit is entitled to do with his money whatever he wants but taking his ball and going home is foolish, as I've said before. This is what I warned against last week.

The GOP has always been known as the Stupid Party. This is an example of why. People have left just because they haven't gotten everything they wanted or because they demanded ideological purity. That's the path to being a minority party.

Yes, it's important to be principled but it's foolish to let an issue, even one as important as illegal immigration, destroy what Ronald Reagan started building. Let's be smart for a change.

We all agree that we need to secure the border. Let's start there by building Charles Krauthammer's wall, then working out from there. We can't do anything until after that's finished.

Until we get that done, though, we shouldn't be leaping off the boat. We should remember that this isn't the only issue going. Remember that confirming sane jurists, cutting taxes & killing terrorists are high priorities, too. Picture Pelosi and Murtha, Kennedy and Schumer doing that.

The key is in not losing sight of the big picture. Which is what we're doing.
