Dogding Deer Didn't Go Good
To say that I'm a little stunned right now would be about right. A little over an hour ago, I was out for a liesurely drive in the country. All I wanted to do was soak in the last few minutes of sunlight, watch a great sunset, then get back to town for a good night's rest.
All that changed when a 2-year-old doe stepped out of the tall grass & onto the road. When it stepped onto the road, it was less than 10 feet in front of me. Needless to say, I had no chance of avoiding it. I heard a loud noise, the vehicle slowed down without me even hitting the brakes.
After pulling to the side of the road, I walked back to see if I could see what happened to the deer. About 5 minutes of searching turned up nothing so I returned to the vehicle to see what damage I'd sustained. The passenger-side front headlight was in pieces & that front panel is krinkled a bit.
I walked back to where the crash happened, about 100 feet from where I pulled off the road. A kind motorist & her daughter stopped past & called 9-1-1. I didn't get their names but I thanked them profusely for stopping.
Right before officer Brad Kadlec arrived, I found the deer, in the ditch that it had come out of. It was motionless. Officer Kadlec asked if I was injured. I told him I was ok. After he checked my license & insurance, we walked back to where the deer was. Brad identified it as a doe & that it wasn't banged up too badly. Hopefully some needy family will get alot of meals from it.
All in all, it was a wierd way to finish my day. Life happens, ya know? That's the first time I've ever hit an animal. And there was nothing I could've done to avoid it. It was right at that time of night when it's too dark to see well with the naked eye but too light for headlights to make a difference. And the deer came out of shoulder high grass.
Rather than feeling bummed out, I'll just thank God that I've got an SUV that protected me from the deer flying up over the hood & through the windshielf. And I'll thank God that he brought 2 nice strangers into my path to help me when I needed it.
