Defense of Marriage Amendment Update, Part II

Following the Senate Judiciary Committee's voting down the Defense of Marriage Amendment, proponents of the Amendment have changed course. According to Rachel Stassen-Berger's Strib article, that next step is firing the Amendment's opponents this November.
Jeff Davis of Minnesota Citizens in Defense of Marriage said he believes the soonest Minnesotans would be able to vote on the marriage amendment is 2008, and he is shifting his focus to bringing down the state senators who oppose the amendment in this fall's election. "I think it is done for the year," Davis said. He said it would take a miracle for the amendment to pass this year, but he is working to see that it passes eventually. "One way or the other, we are going to do it," Davis said.
State Senate Majority Leader Dean Johnson is likely to be one of the casualties. His last election win was by a 52-48 percent margin. And that was in a year where he wasn't surrounded in scandal. For those that were actively involved in the Amendment movement, it's time to shift focus and get hostile legislators 'fired' this November. That means volunteering for phone banks and doorknocking and sending out mailings. That means talking with people who might be like-minded.
And the Legislature's most vocal amendment supporter, Republican Sen. Michele Bachmann of Stillwater, said she's not ready to give up hope for this year. "It's difficult but possible," Bachmann said. She and others at the Capitol have formed a "working group" to find a way to get the marriage amendment through the Senate.
Where there's a will, there's a way and if there's anything as sure as death or taxes, it's that Sen. Bachmann's got the will to get this Amendment on the ballot.
